The Backcountry Wilderness Area of Highlands Ranch is 8,200 acres of open space owned and managed by the HRCA. The Backcountry is home to a wide variety of wildlife, native plants, and birds and is a true gem, right here in our backyard. The HRCA has 11 miles of private, natural surface trails, and there is an additional 12 miles of public Douglas County Trail through the Backcountry.
We offer a variety of programs to get people into the Backcountry from Horse Drawn Hay Rides and Campfires, to Elk Bugling Photo Hunts, Horseback Trail Rides, and adventurous yet educational Youth Camps.
